So I was listening to Kawaii Radio during work, I thought I would test the waters to see if my fellow employees would approve, my one co-worker Anthony actually dug the tunes and called most of the tunes melodic. If you have yet to visit the site you should, it has the best of your favorite anime and video game tunes. Anywhoo, this one song came on with a nice whistle melody and catchy background, it’s name was “Wowa” and the artist was Namie Amuro.
It truly was love at first eardrum, it was so catchy that I and Daniel were wondering if maybe they slipped in some K-POP in the mix. Upon further research I found out that Namie, was the Queen of Pop in Japan and for good reason, as I kept searching for her videos I found another called “Do me more”, I know, I know makes you want to watch it even more, it is an innocent video though very Alice in Wonderland a la’ Tim Burton.
Namie a75% Japanese and $25% Italian girl, was born September 20, 1977 and is what they refer to as a triple threat. At the height of her popularity, she was coined “Teen Queen” and now is referred to as the “Queen of Japanese Pop”. Namie debuted at the age of 14 as an idol in the girl group Super Monkeys, the group failed tremendously but only when she branched out solo did she really make it.
She is the only Japanese female artist to have achieved a Top 10 single each year for 14 consecutive years, quite a feat along with being a divorced single mom, which is not seen so kindly in Japanese culture. So please let’s give her our support. I hope you enjoy my two favorite videos of her below.
“People know my name even in places I never dreamed they would! Sometimes I wonder why they want to look like me. I’d rather they appreciated me as a singer.”
- Namie Amuro, on her fan following.

Namie is the best, even in her super monkey days! She’s come a long way. She even looks great on the latest gisele mag cover
