Not Even ‘GTA: Chinatown Wars’ Sales can catch a break

‘M’ rated games on the DS handheld are a risk, says EEDAR’s Jesse Divnich, noting that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars only managed sales of about 200,000 units in the US last month.

After all the great marketing for Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars it seems like the Nintendo DS was not an appropriate home after all.  We loved the game and gave it our first ever 10/10 review.  But the preliminary sale figures are in for the month of March, and it wasn’t an impressive showing for CTW.  Many analysts say this game will be one of the best rated ‘M’ games available for the Nintendo DS.  And with sales figures only around 200,000 units sold in the US alone, something will have to change.

Whether the influence on rated ‘M’ games on the Nintendo DS backfired or controversial titles held parents from purchasing Chinatown Wars, one thing is apparent.  The DS is a handheld console and is far from appealing to the hardcore gamer.
