Nothing better than finding a $ 10 bill in your pocket, unless of course its a larger denomination. I found the next best thing, to make our readers aware of an excellent arcade game they probably missed back in their youth. Now you have a chance of reliving your youth by playing the game today, well at least through MAME! Or should we just sign a petition to have this released via VC?
I remember the corner pizzeria by our home in NJ, it was called Vito’s! Vito’s always had rare games to play, not just your Pac Man’s and Galaga’s. Gladiator sticks out in my mind as the best arcade game at the time! The characters were larger than anything I’d have ever seen in games. The graphics were superb for 1986 standards. It was not a game that was too difficult, it was just right. One can get pretty far after practicing for a while.
The Atari 2600, revolutionary, ahead of its time and most importantly loads of fun. No longer did we ask mom and dad for chutes and ladders, parcheesi or hungry hungry hippo. Now we had an interactive experience in the palm of our hands, literally!
#5. River Raid – Activision – 1982
This game was very addicting. You controlled an airplane in a top-down view over a river and gets points for shooting down enemy planes, helicopters, ships and balloons.
The really cool factor was that the player could refuel by flying over fuel stations while shooting down enemies and avoiding obstacles. The graphics were excellent for its time as well as the game play. The long river gave us non-repeating levels with increasing challenge and zero load times. Can this ve released on VC please???
Okay, we can all admit we loved the Castlevanias, Metroids and the Ninja Gaidens. These were great all around games with a great theme, action, great storylines and excellent gameplay. However, there were a few great that had all of the aforementioned qualities minus the great theme. Does lacking a great theme disqualify a game from being great? I don’t think so, I just think that one would play the heck out of it, but just never tell anyone about it. These are my top 5 games I loved but was ashamed to admit it!
Little Nemo: The Dreamaster (NES) 1992
This game was loads of fun, with superb graphics, classic Capcom game control and plenty of imagination. Many people wouldn’t like to admit they were playing a game which included journeying into slumberland with a boy wearing pajamas, but I overlooked that.
“The game revolves around a small boy in his own surreal dreams as he journeys to Slumberland. Nemo can ride certain animals such as a frog, gorilla, or a mole, by feeding them candy. Each animal has its own skills needed to complete each level. The purpose of the game is to travel to the Nightmare land to rescue Morpheus, the king of Slumberland, from the clutches of the evil Nightmare King.”
We have seen great old school remakes or sequels lately from classic titles. We’ve seen Bionic Commando, 1942, Rygar, and Street Fighter impact this new generation of gamers thanks to developers reviving them. Punchout and A Boy and his Blob will also be out soon. However where are the forgotten games that we loved from the 80’s. This article will revisit some “forgotten greats” and through this avenue we hope to open the eyes of game developers looking to rekindle some old flames.
5. Karate Kid (NES) – 1987
YES! The great late Pat Morita, what a great actor, we really loved him in the movie. Especially when he would flight and defeat enemies effortlessly. I didn’t pick this game because I have been told I look like Ralph Macchio, it really has been a forgotten great from the NES.
I read mixed reviews for this game online but this is my article and I say its a great. The game featured tournament mode in which Daniel-San has to defeat the cobra-kai and others using punches, kicks and our all-time favorite the crane kick. I must say , the film to game accuracy is very good in this game. Ice breaking stage, fly catching stage, tournament, Okinawa and the typhoon to mention a few.
Why it should be re-made – With today’s graphics and computing power, one can make an argument that this would be a good idea on the Wii. Imagine trying to catch a fly with chopsticks using wii-motes? Ok, this might be a odd proposal but that’s why this one is at the bottom of the list at #5.
