Bo%20Jackson Top 10 Old School 80s Sports Video Games

Growing up in the 80’s, sports and video games would go together like apple pie. My brothers and I were fortunate enough to be pretty good athletes and played the games at home as well. This article will cover the best of the best from the decade. It will cover all systems as well as arcades.   Rankings depend on realism, fun factor, replay value, graphics and sound.

10. Summer Games – Epyx – 1984

Summer Games 2 Top 10 Old School 80s Sports Video Games
Summer Games, this was a classic. It had variety, excellent graphics for its day and was lots of fun to play. I particularly enjoyed the diving event, one would need to make the most moves in the air and try to straighten the diver up for minimal splash.  The judges always favored their home country diver, very realistic feature!

  • Pole vault
  • Platform diving
  • Sprinting
  • Gymnastics
  • Freestyle swimming
  • Skeet shooting
  • Rowing

Epyx continued with this genre and created Summer Games II, Winter Games, World Games and California Games. These were all great games  worth playing again any day of the week!

punch out review Review: Punch Out!!

It’s been 15 years since the Punch-Out!! franchise first hit local arcades.  Not many people knew of Punch-Out!! until it was brought onto the NES 3 years later in 1987 with Mike Tyson as the cover athlete and the final opponent.  Then Super Punch-Out!! came out in 1994, giving the franchise slick 16-bit graphics, an updated roster of fighters, and a new look for Little Mac.

A new Punch-Out!! was released recently for a new generation of gamers on the Nintendo Wii.  Will the game live up to its predecessors?

Really Punch in Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!

punch dummy Really Punch in Mike Tysons Punch Out!!

With the new Punch-Out!! released this week (Nintendo Ads on sides, Thanks!), let’s not forget about the true classic title, Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!  In the video, some dorks show off their engineering degrees.

You see, this is the reason why a great idea can turn out to be so pathetic that I’d rather someone tell me it then show me it.  When I first stumbled onto this video, I thought “Wow, it would be cool to really punch a dummy that will re-create your Punch-Out!! moves”.  Then I saw this video and it completely ruined that possibility of me creating one or even trying this one that was made for the video.  And losing to Glass Joe just tops the cake!!!

Up, up, down, down… Contra Rebirth Heading to a Wii Near You… in Japan

contr Up, up, down, down... Contra Rebirth Heading to a Wii Near You... in Japan

Fans of the retro style 2D Contra will rejoice with this incredible news. “Contra Rebirth” will be reborn and made available through the Nintendo Wiiware… but only in Japan… for now. On May 12th for 1000 Wii Points, Contra Rebirth (In Japan)will feature the side-scrolling action title where shooting and jumping was the golden era of gaming.

Classic NES titles such as, Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!, Contra and DuckTales MegaMan have paved the way from the older 8-bit consoles, to the next-gen consoles we use today.  With this release Contra, Bionic Commando & MegaMan have reemrged from the retro coffins and prove that “WE The Gamers” appreciate and demand classic 2D style games.  And while Punch-Out!!’s release on the Wii is highly anticipated, they too have listened to “We The Gamers” by incorporating the NES controlls as an option to the Wii-mote’s.

Q.   If my brothers were playing, complete the rest of the Contra code for 25 guys? (Answer in comments)

Piston Honda Upgraded to Piston Hondo

May 8th, 2009 mrjuandrful 1 comment

piston hondo Piston Honda Upgraded to Piston HondoHe first was Piston Hurricane (Arcade), then Piston Honda (NES), back to Piston Hurricane (SNES) and now Piston Hondo in the upcoming version of Punch-Out!! for the Wii. This change of name has been common for this character as his surname changed with each release of the game while the first name always remained “Piston”.

Many speculate the name change was based on copyright issues with the car manufacturer, Honda.  Maybe it’s a wise decision but Nintendo has gone down this “name change” road before so it’s not THAT critical.

The character Piston Hondo will surely be seen in the Minor Circuit dawning his white bandana with fluttering eyebrows.

Latest Punch-Out!! Video Shows Giga Mac, Head-To-Head Mode

April 11th, 2009 Daniel Perez 1 comment

In case you haven’t realized it by the graphics on the side of PerezStart, we’re a little excited about Punch-Out!! coming out for the Wii. It’s a franchise we have all loved and were wishing for an updated version to come out sooner than later.

In this latest trailer, Nintendo has finally decided to put a head-to-head versus mode in Punch-Out!!.  It seems to have the same look & feel of the versus mode in Wii Boxing, and that necessarily isn’t a bad thing. I’m just hoping the controls are a lot tighter than Wii Boxing’s controls. You don’t know how many dentures I punched from my ole’ Grandmammy’s pie hole as a result of trying to get the game to register a punch I was throwing correctly.
