Rumor: Final Fantasy VII Remake To Be Announced in 2010? [Update]

December 29th, 2009 Daniel Perez 10 comments

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Given how many Final Fantasy remakes and spin-offs there have been across a number of consoles in the past 5 or so years, one game every Final Fantasy fan has been begging Square-Enix to consider has to be Final Fantasy VII.  It seems the prayers of Final Fantasy fans might be answered sometime next year.

Tetsuya Nomura, who happens to be one of the chief officers on all things Final Fantasy, was interviewed by Japanese magazine ‘Gamega’.  He was asked what Square-Enix had planned for the coming year.  The question, “Will 2010 be the year for the announcement of the game of his dreams?” was asked.  Tetsuya-san replied with the following:

I can just say, that indeed, whereas I’m still working on Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Agito XIII and a little later on The 3rd Birthday (this year), we will announce other games this year and one is terribly awaited from everyone and often “REQUESTED” by fans and even by the press crew that I meet all over the world.

Given that quote, that’s far from actually admitting a Final Fantasy VII remake will be announced. On the other hand, I can’t think of any other Square-Enix game that has been requested by a huge percentage of their fan-base as much as Final Fantasy VII.

[Update: Looks like this rumor might have been too good to be true.  According to a retraction post on RPGLand, it seems their tipster might have fabricated the portion of the interview saying the upcoming game was an often requested game by fans and media.]

Xbox 360 & PS3 Versions of Final Fantasy XIII Revealed To Have Differences

Final Fantasy XIII 360 - PS3 Difference

Whenever a new Final Fantasy title is released on current generation consoles, you can bet it’ll be a graphically impressive game.  The PS3s Blu-Ray disc should be able to handle whatever Square-Enix can throw at it, but it seems the Xbox 360 needs a little help in order to run Final Fantasy XIII.

In an interview with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Square-Enix reveals the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII will be shipped on a dual-layer Blu-ray disc due to the game’s massive size.  It will also have uncompressed media.  The Xbox 360 version will be shipped on multiple discs, which we knew already, but both the audio and graphics will be compressed.

When it comes to Final Fantasy games, I’ve always played them on Playstation, but with this new development, it seems like I have more of a reason to pick up the PS3 version over the Xbox 360. All the Chocobos in the world can’t save Microsoft from this news.

Square-Enix Announces Final Fantasy XIII Releasing March 9, 2010

November 13th, 2009 Daniel Perez 2 comments

Square-Enix officially announced today the release date for their upcoming epic RPG, Final Fantasy XII.  All Chocobo loving fans should mark their calendars on March 9th, 2010 as being the day this current generation of consoles to finally get a new Final Fantasy title.

Final Fantasy XIII will feature a new battle system (which has been the recent trend of new Final Fantasy games), summon system, HD graphics, and a storyline that’s promised to be an “emotional experience”.

The title will be made available on both the PS3 & Xbox 360, which is one of the first times a Final Fantasy title is being launched on multiple platforms on the same day.  During Microsoft E3 2008 press conference, it was revealed Final Fantasy XIII would be making its way to the Xbox 360.  No details yet on how many discs the Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII will be packaged as its expected the PS3 version will simply take up 1 Blu-Ray disc.

finalfantasyxiii 06 500x281 Final Fantasy XIII Demo For Your Viewing Pleasure

Over in Japan, the Blu-Ray version of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children was released. As a special bonus, Square-Enix included a playable demo for their upcoming title, Final Fantasy XIII.  Thanks to the power of the internets, you don’t have to wonder on how the game looks as YouTube user allthenamesaretooken has gone ahead and captured the entire demo!

It should go without saying that the video is full of spoilers, but since the game will reach stateside sometime in 2010, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to peek now as I’m sure we’ll all forget what we saw in a year.

Videos can be seen after the break.

ffxiii 500x270 Final Fantasy XIII Gets Release Date on Amazon.com

Guess what made an appearance on Amazon?  Yup, FFXIII is listed on Amazon and the better news is they’ve listed a Release Date of December 1st 2009.  Although No Official release date has been announced, lining up December 1st, 2009 isn’t out of the picture but I wouldn’t get too excited either.  Pre-ordering Final Fantasy XIII is available through Amazon, and the low price guarantee means: If you order it now and if the Amazon.com price decreases between your order time and the end of the day of the release date, you’ll receive the lowest price.

So it’s a no brainer really…
